In short: Leo (the Lion, 23 July – 22 August in the tropical zodiac) is a fixed fire sign ruled by Sun. In love it needs warmth, loyalty and appreciation. By the classical aspects it is most at ease with the other fire signs, Aries and Sagittarius, and on friendly terms with Libra and Gemini; its opposite, Aquarius, is the classic attraction of opposites. But a Sun sign is one factor in a chart of many. Read this page as a portrait of styles, not a verdict on any couple.

How Leo loves

Leo loves generously and openly. It wants romance with a sense of occasion, and it gives as much warmth as it hopes to receive. Leo is loyal and proud; it needs to feel admired and chosen, and in return it makes a partner feel like the most important person in the room.

What helps a Leo grow in a relationship is making room for a partner's spotlight, and asking for reassurance instead of demanding it.

Sign by sign

Leo and Aries

Two fire signs who admire courage and warmth. Generosity and fun come easily; the task is sharing the spotlight between two people who both like it. Signs four apart share an element. The trine is the most comfortable aspect: values and rhythms tend to agree without much effort. Fire with fire is warm, lively and spontaneous; the challenge is that neither naturally slows down. Leo needs warmth, loyalty and appreciation; Aries needs honesty, energy and room to act.

Leo and Taurus

Two fixed signs with a shared love of quality and loyalty. Leo wants admiration, Taurus wants reliability, and both can be immovable. Generous gestures in both directions keep it warm. Signs three apart share a mode but clash in element. Squares bring friction and motivation in equal measure; many lasting couples are squares who learned to use the tension well. Fire and earth differ in pace — one acts on inspiration, the other on evidence — but each can steady or energise the other. Leo needs warmth, loyalty and appreciation; Taurus needs patience, loyalty and physical affection.

Leo and Gemini

Lively, social and playful: Gemini's wit delights Leo, and Leo's warmth draws Gemini in. Leo needs loyalty to be visible; Gemini needs room to roam mentally. Signs two apart are of compatible elements (fire with air, earth with water). The sextile is an easy, friendly aspect that rewards a little effort. Air feeds fire: ideas and enthusiasm spark each other easily. Leo needs warmth, loyalty and appreciation; Gemini needs conversation, variety and humour.

Leo and Cancer

Cancer nurtures and Leo shines. Leo's warmth reassures Cancer, and Cancer's care supports Leo. Both are sensitive to slights, so appreciation should be spoken aloud. Neighbouring signs share neither element nor mode. Each tends to have what the other lacks, which makes the pair complementary but sometimes puzzling to each other. Fire and water are both passionate but in different ways; one expresses outwardly, the other feels inwardly, and both need to translate. Leo needs warmth, loyalty and appreciation; Cancer needs emotional security and a sense of home.

Leo and Leo

Two Leos bring warmth, loyalty and theatre. Life is generous and fun; pride is the only real obstacle, and both have to learn to applaud as well as be applauded. Two people with the same Sun sign share a basic way of meeting life. That brings instant understanding and the same blind spots. What helps most is warmth, loyalty and appreciation, offered in both directions.

Leo and Virgo

Leo leads with heart, Virgo with care. Virgo quietly supports Leo's plans; Leo brings Virgo out of itself. Leo should avoid demanding praise, Virgo avoid withholding it. Neighbouring signs share neither element nor mode. Each tends to have what the other lacks, which makes the pair complementary but sometimes puzzling to each other. Fire and earth differ in pace — one acts on inspiration, the other on evidence — but each can steady or energise the other. Leo needs warmth, loyalty and appreciation; Virgo needs reliability, kindness and calm.

Leo and Libra

Fire and air, social and stylish. Libra's charm and Leo's warmth make an attractive, sociable pair; both like to be liked, so honesty may need to be invited. Signs two apart are of compatible elements (fire with air, earth with water). The sextile is an easy, friendly aspect that rewards a little effort. Air feeds fire: ideas and enthusiasm spark each other easily. Leo needs warmth, loyalty and appreciation; Libra needs fairness, beauty and partnership.

Leo and Scorpio

Two fixed signs of great loyalty and pride. Attraction is strong and so are wills; the relationship thrives when power is shared openly rather than contested quietly. Signs three apart share a mode but clash in element. Squares bring friction and motivation in equal measure; many lasting couples are squares who learned to use the tension well. Fire and water are both passionate but in different ways; one expresses outwardly, the other feels inwardly, and both need to translate. Leo needs warmth, loyalty and appreciation; Scorpio needs trust, depth and privacy.

Leo and Sagittarius

Two fire signs, enthusiastic and generous. Fun and adventure come naturally; Leo wants devotion, Sagittarius wants freedom, and each can give both. Signs four apart share an element. The trine is the most comfortable aspect: values and rhythms tend to agree without much effort. Fire with fire is warm, lively and spontaneous; the challenge is that neither naturally slows down. Leo needs warmth, loyalty and appreciation; Sagittarius needs freedom, honesty and shared adventure.

Leo and Capricorn

Leo seeks recognition, Capricorn achievement. Both are ambitious and loyal; Leo brings warmth to Capricorn's reserve, and Capricorn brings patience to Leo's plans. Signs five apart share neither element nor mode, and see the world from angles that do not naturally meet. The quincunx asks for constant small adjustments. Fire and earth differ in pace — one acts on inspiration, the other on evidence — but each can steady or energise the other. Leo needs warmth, loyalty and appreciation; Capricorn needs commitment, respect and shared goals.

Leo and Aquarius

Opposite signs: Leo the individual heart, Aquarius the collective cause. Strong attraction and real friction; each teaches the other something essential about love and belonging. Opposite signs share a mode and complementary elements. The attraction of opposites is real: each embodies what the other is learning. Air feeds fire: ideas and enthusiasm spark each other easily. Leo needs warmth, loyalty and appreciation; Aquarius needs friendship, space and shared ideals.

Leo and Pisces

Leo shines outward, Pisces flows inward. Leo protects and Pisces inspires; Leo should not overwhelm, and Pisces should not disappear into accommodation. Signs five apart share neither element nor mode, and see the world from angles that do not naturally meet. The quincunx asks for constant small adjustments. Fire and water are both passionate but in different ways; one expresses outwardly, the other feels inwardly, and both need to translate. Leo needs warmth, loyalty and appreciation; Pisces needs gentleness, imagination and emotional understanding.

Which signs suit Leo best?

By the classical logic of aspects, the easiest matches for Leo are the same-element trines (Aries and Sagittarius) and the sextiles (Libra and Gemini), with Aquarius as the complementary opposite. Squares and quincunxes are traditionally harder. In practice, though, Sun-sign compatibility predicts very little on its own: many devoted couples are squares, and many trines drift apart. What matters more is how the whole charts interact — and, above all, how two people treat each other.

Sun signs and Moon signs

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, tied to the seasons; Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, tied to the stars. Because the two are now about 24° apart, most people born between 23 July and about 17 August have their Sun in Leo by Western reckoning but in Cancer (Karka) by Vedic reckoning. Neither is the "real" sign; they measure different things.

Vedic matchmaking does not use the Sun sign at all. It compares the two Moon signs and nakshatras through Guna Milan. If that is the tradition you follow, see Leo Moon sign compatibility.

Beyond the Sun sign: synastry

Western astrologers compare two people through synastry: the aspects between every planet in one chart and every planet in the other. Venus and Mars describe attraction and desire; the Moon describes emotional needs; Mercury how two people talk; Saturn what makes a relationship feel committed — or heavy. The composite chart, built from the midpoints of the two charts, is read for the relationship as an entity of its own. Liz Greene's Relating (1977) and Stephen Arroyo's work on the elements shaped the modern psychological approach used here.

FAQ

Who is Leo most compatible with? Traditionally the other fire signs (Aries, Sagittarius) and the sextile signs (Libra, Gemini). The whole chart matters far more than the Sun sign.

Is Leo compatible with Aquarius? Opposite signs are often strongly attracted and complementary. They share a mode (fixed) and balance each other's elements; the work is treating differences as balance rather than opposition.

Is my Vedic sign the same as my Western sign? Often not. Most people born in roughly the first three weeks of tropical Leo have the Sun in Cancer in the sidereal zodiac. Check both in your free kundli.
