In short: Libra (the Scales, 23 September – 22 October in the tropical zodiac) is a cardinal air sign ruled by Venus. In love it needs fairness, beauty and partnership. By the classical aspects it is most at ease with the other air signs, Gemini and Aquarius, and on friendly terms with Sagittarius and Leo; its opposite, Aries, is the classic attraction of opposites. But a Sun sign is one factor in a chart of many. Read this page as a portrait of styles, not a verdict on any couple.

How Libra loves
Libra is the sign of partnership, and relationships are central to its life. It loves beauty, courtesy and harmony, and it is skilled at seeing a partner's point of view. Libra flourishes in a relationship of equals and can struggle when it suppresses its own wishes to keep the peace.
What helps a Libra grow in a relationship is stating its own needs early instead of keeping the peace at its own expense.

Sign by sign
Libra and Aries
The classic attraction of opposites: Aries' independence and Libra's partnership. Each mirrors what the other is learning — Aries to consider others, Libra to state what it wants. Opposite signs share a mode and complementary elements. The attraction of opposites is real: each embodies what the other is learning. Air feeds fire: ideas and enthusiasm spark each other easily. Libra needs fairness, beauty and partnership; Aries needs honesty, energy and room to act.
Libra and Taurus
Both are traditionally ruled by Venus, so beauty, comfort and harmony matter to each. Taurus is more possessive, Libra more sociable; shared aesthetics are a strong bond. Signs five apart share neither element nor mode, and see the world from angles that do not naturally meet. The quincunx asks for constant small adjustments. Air and earth think differently — one in possibilities, the other in practicalities — and can build well together once they respect that. Libra needs fairness, beauty and partnership; Taurus needs patience, loyalty and physical affection.
Libra and Gemini
Two air signs who value conversation, beauty and fairness. Social life is easy together; decisions can drift when both prefer to keep options open. Signs four apart share an element. The trine is the most comfortable aspect: values and rhythms tend to agree without much effort. Air with air shares ideas and conversation easily; the challenge is grounding feelings in action. Libra needs fairness, beauty and partnership; Gemini needs conversation, variety and humour.
Libra and Cancer
Cancer wants closeness, Libra wants harmony and some social air. Both dislike conflict, which can leave issues unspoken; gentle directness helps them both. Signs three apart share a mode but clash in element. Squares bring friction and motivation in equal measure; many lasting couples are squares who learned to use the tension well. Air and water meet as head and heart; understanding grows when each takes the other's language seriously. Libra needs fairness, beauty and partnership; Cancer needs emotional security and a sense of home.
Libra and Leo
Fire and air, social and stylish. Libra's charm and Leo's warmth make an attractive, sociable pair; both like to be liked, so honesty may need to be invited. Signs two apart are of compatible elements (fire with air, earth with water). The sextile is an easy, friendly aspect that rewards a little effort. Air feeds fire: ideas and enthusiasm spark each other easily. Libra needs fairness, beauty and partnership; Leo needs warmth, loyalty and appreciation.
Libra and Virgo
Virgo is practical, Libra diplomatic. Both appreciate refinement and good manners; decisions go best when Virgo supplies the detail and Libra the balance. Neighbouring signs share neither element nor mode. Each tends to have what the other lacks, which makes the pair complementary but sometimes puzzling to each other. Air and earth think differently — one in possibilities, the other in practicalities — and can build well together once they respect that. Libra needs fairness, beauty and partnership; Virgo needs reliability, kindness and calm.
Libra and Libra
Two Libras create a gracious, harmonious life. Fairness and beauty are shared values; making decisions and naming conflicts are the skills to build together. Two people with the same Sun sign share a basic way of meeting life. That brings instant understanding and the same blind spots. What helps most is fairness, beauty and partnership, offered in both directions.
Libra and Scorpio
Libra seeks balance, Scorpio depth. Libra's grace can calm Scorpio, and Scorpio's intensity can deepen Libra; honesty about feelings is the bridge. Neighbouring signs share neither element nor mode. Each tends to have what the other lacks, which makes the pair complementary but sometimes puzzling to each other. Air and water meet as head and heart; understanding grows when each takes the other's language seriously. Libra needs fairness, beauty and partnership; Scorpio needs trust, depth and privacy.
Libra and Sagittarius
Air and fire, sociable and optimistic. Libra brings charm, Sagittarius brings adventure; both enjoy people and ideas, and commitment grows when freedom is respected. Signs two apart are of compatible elements (fire with air, earth with water). The sextile is an easy, friendly aspect that rewards a little effort. Air feeds fire: ideas and enthusiasm spark each other easily. Libra needs fairness, beauty and partnership; Sagittarius needs freedom, honesty and shared adventure.
Libra and Capricorn
Two cardinal signs who like to lead in different ways — Libra through people, Capricorn through structure. Shared goals and clear roles help a great deal. Signs three apart share a mode but clash in element. Squares bring friction and motivation in equal measure; many lasting couples are squares who learned to use the tension well. Air and earth think differently — one in possibilities, the other in practicalities — and can build well together once they respect that. Libra needs fairness, beauty and partnership; Capricorn needs commitment, respect and shared goals.
Libra and Aquarius
Two air signs who share ideals and enjoy each other's minds. A fair, friendly, socially engaged pair; emotional closeness may need to be cultivated deliberately. Signs four apart share an element. The trine is the most comfortable aspect: values and rhythms tend to agree without much effort. Air with air shares ideas and conversation easily; the challenge is grounding feelings in action. Libra needs fairness, beauty and partnership; Aquarius needs friendship, space and shared ideals.
Libra and Pisces
Both gentle and romantic. Libra brings balance and Pisces brings imagination; both avoid conflict, so kind directness is the gift each can give the other. Signs five apart share neither element nor mode, and see the world from angles that do not naturally meet. The quincunx asks for constant small adjustments. Air and water meet as head and heart; understanding grows when each takes the other's language seriously. Libra needs fairness, beauty and partnership; Pisces needs gentleness, imagination and emotional understanding.
Which signs suit Libra best?
By the classical logic of aspects, the easiest matches for Libra are the same-element trines (Gemini and Aquarius) and the sextiles (Sagittarius and Leo), with Aries as the complementary opposite. Squares and quincunxes are traditionally harder. In practice, though, Sun-sign compatibility predicts very little on its own: many devoted couples are squares, and many trines drift apart. What matters more is how the whole charts interact — and, above all, how two people treat each other.
Sun signs and Moon signs
Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, tied to the seasons; Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, tied to the stars. Because the two are now about 24° apart, most people born between 23 September and about 17 October have their Sun in Libra by Western reckoning but in Virgo (Kanya) by Vedic reckoning. Neither is the "real" sign; they measure different things.
Vedic matchmaking does not use the Sun sign at all. It compares the two Moon signs and nakshatras through Guna Milan. If that is the tradition you follow, see Libra Moon sign compatibility.
Beyond the Sun sign: synastry
Western astrologers compare two people through synastry: the aspects between every planet in one chart and every planet in the other. Venus and Mars describe attraction and desire; the Moon describes emotional needs; Mercury how two people talk; Saturn what makes a relationship feel committed — or heavy. The composite chart, built from the midpoints of the two charts, is read for the relationship as an entity of its own. Liz Greene's Relating (1977) and Stephen Arroyo's work on the elements shaped the modern psychological approach used here.
FAQ
Who is Libra most compatible with? Traditionally the other air signs (Gemini, Aquarius) and the sextile signs (Sagittarius, Leo). The whole chart matters far more than the Sun sign.
Is Libra compatible with Aries? Opposite signs are often strongly attracted and complementary. They share a mode (cardinal) and balance each other's elements; the work is treating differences as balance rather than opposition.
Is my Vedic sign the same as my Western sign? Often not. Most people born in roughly the first three weeks of tropical Libra have the Sun in Virgo in the sidereal zodiac. Check both in your free kundli.
