In short: Aries (the Ram, 21 March – 19 April in the tropical zodiac) is a cardinal fire sign ruled by Mars. In love it needs honesty, energy and room to act. By the classical aspects it is most at ease with the other fire signs, Leo and Sagittarius, and on friendly terms with Gemini and Aquarius; its opposite, Libra, is the classic attraction of opposites. But a Sun sign is one factor in a chart of many. Read this page as a portrait of styles, not a verdict on any couple.

How Aries loves
Aries loves the way it does everything else: directly, quickly and with its whole heart. Attraction is often immediate, and an Aries Sun tends to pursue rather than wait. It is honest about what it feels, sometimes bluntly, and it gets bored by games. What it offers is courage — a partner who will defend you, encourage you and take the first step when you hesitate.
What helps an Aries grow in a relationship is slowing down enough to listen, and letting quarrels end without a winner.

Sign by sign
Aries and Aries
Two Aries Suns recognise each other's speed at once. Life together is lively and frank; the work is taking turns to lead and letting arguments end as fast as they start. Two people with the same Sun sign share a basic way of meeting life. That brings instant understanding and the same blind spots. What helps most is honesty, energy and room to act, offered in both directions.
Aries and Taurus
Aries starts things and Taurus finishes them. Aries can find Taurus slow, Taurus can find Aries rash, yet each supplies exactly what the other lacks when they agree on a shared aim. Neighbouring signs share neither element nor mode. Each tends to have what the other lacks, which makes the pair complementary but sometimes puzzling to each other. Fire and earth differ in pace — one acts on inspiration, the other on evidence — but each can steady or energise the other. Aries needs honesty, energy and room to act; Taurus needs patience, loyalty and physical affection.
Aries and Gemini
Quick, playful and curious, this pair keeps each other entertained. Gemini gives Aries ideas to act on; Aries gives Gemini a reason to follow through. Signs two apart are of compatible elements (fire with air, earth with water). The sextile is an easy, friendly aspect that rewards a little effort. Air feeds fire: ideas and enthusiasm spark each other easily. Aries needs honesty, energy and room to act; Gemini needs conversation, variety and humour.
Aries and Cancer
Aries meets the world head-on; Cancer protects what matters. Aries learns gentleness and Cancer learns boldness, provided Aries' bluntness is not mistaken for unkindness. Signs three apart share a mode but clash in element. Squares bring friction and motivation in equal measure; many lasting couples are squares who learned to use the tension well. Fire and water are both passionate but in different ways; one expresses outwardly, the other feels inwardly, and both need to translate. Aries needs honesty, energy and room to act; Cancer needs emotional security and a sense of home.
Aries and Leo
Two fire signs who admire courage and warmth. Generosity and fun come easily; the task is sharing the spotlight between two people who both like it. Signs four apart share an element. The trine is the most comfortable aspect: values and rhythms tend to agree without much effort. Fire with fire is warm, lively and spontaneous; the challenge is that neither naturally slows down. Aries needs honesty, energy and room to act; Leo needs warmth, loyalty and appreciation.
Aries and Virgo
Aries acts, Virgo refines. Virgo can make Aries' plans work in practice, while Aries can free Virgo from over-checking. Criticism and impatience are the two habits to watch. Signs five apart share neither element nor mode, and see the world from angles that do not naturally meet. The quincunx asks for constant small adjustments. Fire and earth differ in pace — one acts on inspiration, the other on evidence — but each can steady or energise the other. Aries needs honesty, energy and room to act; Virgo needs reliability, kindness and calm.
Aries and Libra
The classic attraction of opposites: Aries' independence and Libra's partnership. Each mirrors what the other is learning — Aries to consider others, Libra to state what it wants. Opposite signs share a mode and complementary elements. The attraction of opposites is real: each embodies what the other is learning. Air feeds fire: ideas and enthusiasm spark each other easily. Aries needs honesty, energy and room to act; Libra needs fairness, beauty and partnership.
Aries and Scorpio
Both ruled by Mars in traditional astrology, these two share intensity and determination. Aries fights in the open, Scorpio strategically; trust grows once both feel they are on the same side. Signs five apart share neither element nor mode, and see the world from angles that do not naturally meet. The quincunx asks for constant small adjustments. Fire and water are both passionate but in different ways; one expresses outwardly, the other feels inwardly, and both need to translate. Aries needs honesty, energy and room to act; Scorpio needs trust, depth and privacy.
Aries and Sagittarius
Two adventurous fire signs with a shared appetite for freedom and new experiences. Honesty is easy here; staying put long enough to build something is the shared challenge. Signs four apart share an element. The trine is the most comfortable aspect: values and rhythms tend to agree without much effort. Fire with fire is warm, lively and spontaneous; the challenge is that neither naturally slows down. Aries needs honesty, energy and room to act; Sagittarius needs freedom, honesty and shared adventure.
Aries and Capricorn
Both are ambitious initiators, but Aries sprints and Capricorn plans for the long term. Respect for each other's competence turns friction into a formidable working partnership. Signs three apart share a mode but clash in element. Squares bring friction and motivation in equal measure; many lasting couples are squares who learned to use the tension well. Fire and earth differ in pace — one acts on inspiration, the other on evidence — but each can steady or energise the other. Aries needs honesty, energy and room to act; Capricorn needs commitment, respect and shared goals.
Aries and Aquarius
Aries brings action, Aquarius brings vision. Both value independence, which keeps the relationship spacious; the work is turning a meeting of minds into warmth. Signs two apart are of compatible elements (fire with air, earth with water). The sextile is an easy, friendly aspect that rewards a little effort. Air feeds fire: ideas and enthusiasm spark each other easily. Aries needs honesty, energy and room to act; Aquarius needs friendship, space and shared ideals.
Aries and Pisces
Aries is direct and Pisces intuitive. Aries can protect and energise Pisces, and Pisces can soften Aries' edges. Both need to say plainly what they feel instead of assuming. Neighbouring signs share neither element nor mode. Each tends to have what the other lacks, which makes the pair complementary but sometimes puzzling to each other. Fire and water are both passionate but in different ways; one expresses outwardly, the other feels inwardly, and both need to translate. Aries needs honesty, energy and room to act; Pisces needs gentleness, imagination and emotional understanding.
Which signs suit Aries best?
By the classical logic of aspects, the easiest matches for Aries are the same-element trines (Leo and Sagittarius) and the sextiles (Gemini and Aquarius), with Libra as the complementary opposite. Squares and quincunxes are traditionally harder. In practice, though, Sun-sign compatibility predicts very little on its own: many devoted couples are squares, and many trines drift apart. What matters more is how the whole charts interact — and, above all, how two people treat each other.
Sun signs and Moon signs
Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, tied to the seasons; Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, tied to the stars. Because the two are now about 24° apart, most people born between 21 March and about 14 April have their Sun in Aries by Western reckoning but in Pisces (Meena) by Vedic reckoning. Neither is the "real" sign; they measure different things.
Vedic matchmaking does not use the Sun sign at all. It compares the two Moon signs and nakshatras through Guna Milan. If that is the tradition you follow, see Aries Moon sign compatibility.
Beyond the Sun sign: synastry
Western astrologers compare two people through synastry: the aspects between every planet in one chart and every planet in the other. Venus and Mars describe attraction and desire; the Moon describes emotional needs; Mercury how two people talk; Saturn what makes a relationship feel committed — or heavy. The composite chart, built from the midpoints of the two charts, is read for the relationship as an entity of its own. Liz Greene's Relating (1977) and Stephen Arroyo's work on the elements shaped the modern psychological approach used here.
FAQ
Who is Aries most compatible with? Traditionally the other fire signs (Leo, Sagittarius) and the sextile signs (Gemini, Aquarius). The whole chart matters far more than the Sun sign.
Is Aries compatible with Libra? Opposite signs are often strongly attracted and complementary. They share a mode (cardinal) and balance each other's elements; the work is treating differences as balance rather than opposition.
Is my Vedic sign the same as my Western sign? Often not. Most people born in roughly the first three weeks of tropical Aries have the Sun in Pisces in the sidereal zodiac. Check both in your free kundli.
