In short: Capricorn (the Sea-goat, 22 December – 19 January in the tropical zodiac) is a cardinal earth sign ruled by Saturn. In love it needs commitment, respect and shared goals. By the classical aspects it is most at ease with the other earth signs, Taurus and Virgo, and on friendly terms with Pisces and Scorpio; its opposite, Cancer, is the classic attraction of opposites. But a Sun sign is one factor in a chart of many. Read this page as a portrait of styles, not a verdict on any couple.

How Capricorn loves
Capricorn loves seriously. It takes commitment as a promise, and shows love by building something that lasts — a home, security, a shared future. Its reserve can hide real tenderness and a dry sense of humour that appears once it feels safe.
What helps a Capricorn grow in a relationship is letting work wait sometimes, and showing tenderness openly.

Sign by sign
Capricorn and Aries
Both are ambitious initiators, but Aries sprints and Capricorn plans for the long term. Respect for each other's competence turns friction into a formidable working partnership. Signs three apart share a mode but clash in element. Squares bring friction and motivation in equal measure; many lasting couples are squares who learned to use the tension well. Fire and earth differ in pace — one acts on inspiration, the other on evidence — but each can steady or energise the other. Capricorn needs commitment, respect and shared goals; Aries needs honesty, energy and room to act.
Capricorn and Taurus
Two earth signs who build patiently. Shared goals, financial sense and loyalty come easily; warmth grows from small rituals of affection that both remember to keep. Signs four apart share an element. The trine is the most comfortable aspect: values and rhythms tend to agree without much effort. Earth with earth is steady and practical; the challenge is keeping room for spontaneity. Capricorn needs commitment, respect and shared goals; Taurus needs patience, loyalty and physical affection.
Capricorn and Gemini
Gemini improvises and Capricorn plans. Capricorn can give Gemini's talents a structure, and Gemini can lighten Capricorn's load. Respect for different rhythms is the key. Signs five apart share neither element nor mode, and see the world from angles that do not naturally meet. The quincunx asks for constant small adjustments. Air and earth think differently — one in possibilities, the other in practicalities — and can build well together once they respect that. Capricorn needs commitment, respect and shared goals; Gemini needs conversation, variety and humour.
Capricorn and Cancer
Opposite signs of home and the world: Cancer tends the private life, Capricorn the public one. Together they can build something lasting, if feelings are given as much time as plans. Opposite signs share a mode and complementary elements. The attraction of opposites is real: each embodies what the other is learning. Water nourishes earth: care and practicality support each other. Capricorn needs commitment, respect and shared goals; Cancer needs emotional security and a sense of home.
Capricorn and Leo
Leo seeks recognition, Capricorn achievement. Both are ambitious and loyal; Leo brings warmth to Capricorn's reserve, and Capricorn brings patience to Leo's plans. Signs five apart share neither element nor mode, and see the world from angles that do not naturally meet. The quincunx asks for constant small adjustments. Fire and earth differ in pace — one acts on inspiration, the other on evidence — but each can steady or energise the other. Capricorn needs commitment, respect and shared goals; Leo needs warmth, loyalty and appreciation.
Capricorn and Virgo
Two earth signs, responsible and practical. Mutual respect and steady progress come naturally; affection grows when both allow themselves to relax. Signs four apart share an element. The trine is the most comfortable aspect: values and rhythms tend to agree without much effort. Earth with earth is steady and practical; the challenge is keeping room for spontaneity. Capricorn needs commitment, respect and shared goals; Virgo needs reliability, kindness and calm.
Capricorn and Libra
Two cardinal signs who like to lead in different ways — Libra through people, Capricorn through structure. Shared goals and clear roles help a great deal. Signs three apart share a mode but clash in element. Squares bring friction and motivation in equal measure; many lasting couples are squares who learned to use the tension well. Air and earth think differently — one in possibilities, the other in practicalities — and can build well together once they respect that. Capricorn needs commitment, respect and shared goals; Libra needs fairness, beauty and partnership.
Capricorn and Scorpio
Earth and water, determined and loyal. Both take commitment seriously and can build a strong, private partnership; warmth needs to be shown, not assumed. Signs two apart are of compatible elements (fire with air, earth with water). The sextile is an easy, friendly aspect that rewards a little effort. Water nourishes earth: care and practicality support each other. Capricorn needs commitment, respect and shared goals; Scorpio needs trust, depth and privacy.
Capricorn and Sagittarius
Sagittarius expands and Capricorn consolidates. Capricorn can help Sagittarius's visions take shape; Sagittarius can bring faith and humour to Capricorn's effort. Neighbouring signs share neither element nor mode. Each tends to have what the other lacks, which makes the pair complementary but sometimes puzzling to each other. Fire and earth differ in pace — one acts on inspiration, the other on evidence — but each can steady or energise the other. Capricorn needs commitment, respect and shared goals; Sagittarius needs freedom, honesty and shared adventure.
Capricorn and Capricorn
Two Capricorns share ambition, responsibility and loyalty. Their life together can be very solid; playfulness and tenderness are worth scheduling, if necessary. Two people with the same Sun sign share a basic way of meeting life. That brings instant understanding and the same blind spots. What helps most is commitment, respect and shared goals, offered in both directions.
Capricorn and Aquarius
Both traditionally ruled by Saturn: serious, principled and independent. Capricorn works within structures, Aquarius changes them; shared purpose unites them. Neighbouring signs share neither element nor mode. Each tends to have what the other lacks, which makes the pair complementary but sometimes puzzling to each other. Air and earth think differently — one in possibilities, the other in practicalities — and can build well together once they respect that. Capricorn needs commitment, respect and shared goals; Aquarius needs friendship, space and shared ideals.
Capricorn and Pisces
Earth and water: Capricorn gives structure, Pisces gives compassion and imagination. A protective, supportive pairing when both value what the other brings. Signs two apart are of compatible elements (fire with air, earth with water). The sextile is an easy, friendly aspect that rewards a little effort. Water nourishes earth: care and practicality support each other. Capricorn needs commitment, respect and shared goals; Pisces needs gentleness, imagination and emotional understanding.
Which signs suit Capricorn best?
By the classical logic of aspects, the easiest matches for Capricorn are the same-element trines (Taurus and Virgo) and the sextiles (Pisces and Scorpio), with Cancer as the complementary opposite. Squares and quincunxes are traditionally harder. In practice, though, Sun-sign compatibility predicts very little on its own: many devoted couples are squares, and many trines drift apart. What matters more is how the whole charts interact — and, above all, how two people treat each other.
Sun signs and Moon signs
Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, tied to the seasons; Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, tied to the stars. Because the two are now about 24° apart, most people born between 22 December and about 14 January have their Sun in Capricorn by Western reckoning but in Sagittarius (Dhanu) by Vedic reckoning. Neither is the "real" sign; they measure different things.
Vedic matchmaking does not use the Sun sign at all. It compares the two Moon signs and nakshatras through Guna Milan. If that is the tradition you follow, see Capricorn Moon sign compatibility.
Beyond the Sun sign: synastry
Western astrologers compare two people through synastry: the aspects between every planet in one chart and every planet in the other. Venus and Mars describe attraction and desire; the Moon describes emotional needs; Mercury how two people talk; Saturn what makes a relationship feel committed — or heavy. The composite chart, built from the midpoints of the two charts, is read for the relationship as an entity of its own. Liz Greene's Relating (1977) and Stephen Arroyo's work on the elements shaped the modern psychological approach used here.
FAQ
Who is Capricorn most compatible with? Traditionally the other earth signs (Taurus, Virgo) and the sextile signs (Pisces, Scorpio). The whole chart matters far more than the Sun sign.
Is Capricorn compatible with Cancer? Opposite signs are often strongly attracted and complementary. They share a mode (cardinal) and balance each other's elements; the work is treating differences as balance rather than opposition.
Is my Vedic sign the same as my Western sign? Often not. Most people born in roughly the first three weeks of tropical Capricorn have the Sun in Sagittarius in the sidereal zodiac. Check both in your free kundli.
