On this page
In short: Aquarius (the Water-bearer, 20 January – 18 February in the tropical zodiac) is a fixed air sign ruled by Uranus (modern), Saturn (traditional). In love it needs friendship, space and shared ideals. By the classical aspects it is most at ease with the other air signs, Gemini and Libra, and on friendly terms with Aries and Sagittarius; its opposite, Leo, is the classic attraction of opposites. But a Sun sign is one factor in a chart of many. Read this page as a portrait of styles, not a verdict on any couple.

How Aquarius loves
Aquarius loves as a friend first. It values independence — its own and its partner's — and is drawn to people with original minds and shared ideals. It can seem detached when it is simply thinking; its loyalty is real, and it shows care through acceptance and support for who a partner truly is.
What helps an Aquarius grow in a relationship is letting a partner close to its feelings, not only its ideas.

Sign by sign
Aquarius and Aries
Aries brings action, Aquarius brings vision. Both value independence, which keeps the relationship spacious; the work is turning a meeting of minds into warmth. Signs two apart are of compatible elements (fire with air, earth with water). The sextile is an easy, friendly aspect that rewards a little effort. Air feeds fire: ideas and enthusiasm spark each other easily. Aquarius needs friendship, space and shared ideals; Aries needs honesty, energy and room to act.
Aquarius and Taurus
Two fixed signs with different priorities: Taurus the personal and sensual, Aquarius the social and ideal. Respect for each other's principles helps more than trying to win. Signs three apart share a mode but clash in element. Squares bring friction and motivation in equal measure; many lasting couples are squares who learned to use the tension well. Air and earth think differently — one in possibilities, the other in practicalities — and can build well together once they respect that. Aquarius needs friendship, space and shared ideals; Taurus needs patience, loyalty and physical affection.
Aquarius and Gemini
Two air signs with a meeting of minds. Friendship comes first and stays central; emotional expression may need deliberate attention to keep the relationship from becoming only intellectual. Signs four apart share an element. The trine is the most comfortable aspect: values and rhythms tend to agree without much effort. Air with air shares ideas and conversation easily; the challenge is grounding feelings in action. Aquarius needs friendship, space and shared ideals; Gemini needs conversation, variety and humour.
Aquarius and Cancer
Cancer needs emotional closeness and Aquarius needs independence. The pairing asks for real understanding, and rewards it with a relationship that is both caring and free. Signs five apart share neither element nor mode, and see the world from angles that do not naturally meet. The quincunx asks for constant small adjustments. Air and water meet as head and heart; understanding grows when each takes the other's language seriously. Aquarius needs friendship, space and shared ideals; Cancer needs emotional security and a sense of home.
Aquarius and Leo
Opposite signs: Leo the individual heart, Aquarius the collective cause. Strong attraction and real friction; each teaches the other something essential about love and belonging. Opposite signs share a mode and complementary elements. The attraction of opposites is real: each embodies what the other is learning. Air feeds fire: ideas and enthusiasm spark each other easily. Aquarius needs friendship, space and shared ideals; Leo needs warmth, loyalty and appreciation.
Aquarius and Virgo
Virgo improves systems, Aquarius reinvents them. Both are thoughtful and somewhat reserved; shared projects and causes are a strong foundation. Signs five apart share neither element nor mode, and see the world from angles that do not naturally meet. The quincunx asks for constant small adjustments. Air and earth think differently — one in possibilities, the other in practicalities — and can build well together once they respect that. Aquarius needs friendship, space and shared ideals; Virgo needs reliability, kindness and calm.
Aquarius and Libra
Two air signs who share ideals and enjoy each other's minds. A fair, friendly, socially engaged pair; emotional closeness may need to be cultivated deliberately. Signs four apart share an element. The trine is the most comfortable aspect: values and rhythms tend to agree without much effort. Air with air shares ideas and conversation easily; the challenge is grounding feelings in action. Aquarius needs friendship, space and shared ideals; Libra needs fairness, beauty and partnership.
Aquarius and Scorpio
Two fixed signs: Scorpio the emotional depth, Aquarius the detached ideal. Each respects the other's strength; flexibility is the shared lesson. Signs three apart share a mode but clash in element. Squares bring friction and motivation in equal measure; many lasting couples are squares who learned to use the tension well. Air and water meet as head and heart; understanding grows when each takes the other's language seriously. Aquarius needs friendship, space and shared ideals; Scorpio needs trust, depth and privacy.
Aquarius and Sagittarius
Fire and air, both independent and idealistic. Friendship and shared causes come easily; both need to make room for vulnerability. Signs two apart are of compatible elements (fire with air, earth with water). The sextile is an easy, friendly aspect that rewards a little effort. Air feeds fire: ideas and enthusiasm spark each other easily. Aquarius needs friendship, space and shared ideals; Sagittarius needs freedom, honesty and shared adventure.
Aquarius and Capricorn
Both traditionally ruled by Saturn: serious, principled and independent. Capricorn works within structures, Aquarius changes them; shared purpose unites them. Neighbouring signs share neither element nor mode. Each tends to have what the other lacks, which makes the pair complementary but sometimes puzzling to each other. Air and earth think differently — one in possibilities, the other in practicalities — and can build well together once they respect that. Aquarius needs friendship, space and shared ideals; Capricorn needs commitment, respect and shared goals.
Aquarius and Aquarius
Two Aquarians share ideals, independence and friendship. They respect each other's space; warmth and emotional presence are what they must choose to add. Two people with the same Sun sign share a basic way of meeting life. That brings instant understanding and the same blind spots. What helps most is friendship, space and shared ideals, offered in both directions.
Aquarius and Pisces
Aquarius thinks in systems, Pisces feels in waves. Both are humane and idealistic; clear communication bridges the gap between head and heart. Neighbouring signs share neither element nor mode. Each tends to have what the other lacks, which makes the pair complementary but sometimes puzzling to each other. Air and water meet as head and heart; understanding grows when each takes the other's language seriously. Aquarius needs friendship, space and shared ideals; Pisces needs gentleness, imagination and emotional understanding.
Which signs suit Aquarius best?
By the classical logic of aspects, the easiest matches for Aquarius are the same-element trines (Gemini and Libra) and the sextiles (Aries and Sagittarius), with Leo as the complementary opposite. Squares and quincunxes are traditionally harder. In practice, though, Sun-sign compatibility predicts very little on its own: many devoted couples are squares, and many trines drift apart. What matters more is how the whole charts interact — and, above all, how two people treat each other.
Sun signs and Moon signs
Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, tied to the seasons; Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, tied to the stars. Because the two are now about 24° apart, most people born between 20 January and about 13 February have their Sun in Aquarius by Western reckoning but in Capricorn (Makara) by Vedic reckoning. Neither is the "real" sign; they measure different things.
Vedic matchmaking does not use the Sun sign at all. It compares the two Moon signs and nakshatras through Guna Milan. If that is the tradition you follow, see Aquarius Moon sign compatibility.
Beyond the Sun sign: synastry
Western astrologers compare two people through synastry: the aspects between every planet in one chart and every planet in the other. Venus and Mars describe attraction and desire; the Moon describes emotional needs; Mercury how two people talk; Saturn what makes a relationship feel committed — or heavy. The composite chart, built from the midpoints of the two charts, is read for the relationship as an entity of its own. Liz Greene's Relating (1977) and Stephen Arroyo's work on the elements shaped the modern psychological approach used here.
FAQ
Who is Aquarius most compatible with? Traditionally the other air signs (Gemini, Libra) and the sextile signs (Aries, Sagittarius). The whole chart matters far more than the Sun sign.
Is Aquarius compatible with Leo? Opposite signs are often strongly attracted and complementary. They share a mode (fixed) and balance each other's elements; the work is treating differences as balance rather than opposition.
Is my Vedic sign the same as my Western sign? Often not. Most people born in roughly the first three weeks of tropical Aquarius have the Sun in Capricorn in the sidereal zodiac. Check both in your free kundli.
