In short: Pisces (the Fishes, 19 February – 20 March in the tropical zodiac) is a mutable water sign ruled by Neptune (modern), Jupiter (traditional). In love it needs gentleness, imagination and emotional understanding. By the classical aspects it is most at ease with the other water signs, Cancer and Scorpio, and on friendly terms with Taurus and Capricorn; its opposite, Virgo, is the classic attraction of opposites. But a Sun sign is one factor in a chart of many. Read this page as a portrait of styles, not a verdict on any couple.

How Pisces loves

Pisces loves with compassion and imagination. It feels a partner's moods almost as its own and is drawn to romance, music and spiritual connection. It is gentle and forgiving; its task in love is to keep healthy boundaries and to see a partner as they are, not only as it dreams them.

What helps a Pisces grow in a relationship is keeping firm boundaries and seeing a partner clearly.

Sign by sign

Pisces and Aries

Aries is direct and Pisces intuitive. Aries can protect and energise Pisces, and Pisces can soften Aries' edges. Both need to say plainly what they feel instead of assuming. Neighbouring signs share neither element nor mode. Each tends to have what the other lacks, which makes the pair complementary but sometimes puzzling to each other. Fire and water are both passionate but in different ways; one expresses outwardly, the other feels inwardly, and both need to translate. Pisces needs gentleness, imagination and emotional understanding; Aries needs honesty, energy and room to act.

Pisces and Taurus

Earth and water, both gentle and pleasure-loving. Taurus offers Pisces security, Pisces offers Taurus imagination. A soft, affectionate pairing that needs some practical boundaries. Signs two apart are of compatible elements (fire with air, earth with water). The sextile is an easy, friendly aspect that rewards a little effort. Water nourishes earth: care and practicality support each other. Pisces needs gentleness, imagination and emotional understanding; Taurus needs patience, loyalty and physical affection.

Pisces and Gemini

Both are dual signs, adaptable and imaginative. Gemini thinks and Pisces feels, so misunderstandings come from different languages rather than different values. Signs three apart share a mode but clash in element. Squares bring friction and motivation in equal measure; many lasting couples are squares who learned to use the tension well. Air and water meet as head and heart; understanding grows when each takes the other's language seriously. Pisces needs gentleness, imagination and emotional understanding; Gemini needs conversation, variety and humour.

Pisces and Cancer

Two water signs, intuitive and compassionate. Emotional rapport is natural; practical matters and boundaries need conscious attention. Signs four apart share an element. The trine is the most comfortable aspect: values and rhythms tend to agree without much effort. Water with water shares deep emotional understanding; the challenge is perspective when moods run high. Pisces needs gentleness, imagination and emotional understanding; Cancer needs emotional security and a sense of home.

Pisces and Leo

Leo shines outward, Pisces flows inward. Leo protects and Pisces inspires; Leo should not overwhelm, and Pisces should not disappear into accommodation. Signs five apart share neither element nor mode, and see the world from angles that do not naturally meet. The quincunx asks for constant small adjustments. Fire and water are both passionate but in different ways; one expresses outwardly, the other feels inwardly, and both need to translate. Pisces needs gentleness, imagination and emotional understanding; Leo needs warmth, loyalty and appreciation.

Pisces and Virgo

Opposite signs of service: Virgo through practical help, Pisces through compassion. A deeply caring pairing that needs to balance realism with imagination. Opposite signs share a mode and complementary elements. The attraction of opposites is real: each embodies what the other is learning. Water nourishes earth: care and practicality support each other. Pisces needs gentleness, imagination and emotional understanding; Virgo needs reliability, kindness and calm.

Pisces and Libra

Both gentle and romantic. Libra brings balance and Pisces brings imagination; both avoid conflict, so kind directness is the gift each can give the other. Signs five apart share neither element nor mode, and see the world from angles that do not naturally meet. The quincunx asks for constant small adjustments. Air and water meet as head and heart; understanding grows when each takes the other's language seriously. Pisces needs gentleness, imagination and emotional understanding; Libra needs fairness, beauty and partnership.

Pisces and Scorpio

Two water signs with a strong intuitive bond. Scorpio offers protection, Pisces offers acceptance; honesty keeps the closeness healthy. Signs four apart share an element. The trine is the most comfortable aspect: values and rhythms tend to agree without much effort. Water with water shares deep emotional understanding; the challenge is perspective when moods run high. Pisces needs gentleness, imagination and emotional understanding; Scorpio needs trust, depth and privacy.

Pisces and Sagittarius

Both traditionally ruled by Jupiter: generous, idealistic and spiritual. Sagittarius seeks meaning in the world, Pisces within; practical life needs attention. Signs three apart share a mode but clash in element. Squares bring friction and motivation in equal measure; many lasting couples are squares who learned to use the tension well. Fire and water are both passionate but in different ways; one expresses outwardly, the other feels inwardly, and both need to translate. Pisces needs gentleness, imagination and emotional understanding; Sagittarius needs freedom, honesty and shared adventure.

Pisces and Capricorn

Earth and water: Capricorn gives structure, Pisces gives compassion and imagination. A protective, supportive pairing when both value what the other brings. Signs two apart are of compatible elements (fire with air, earth with water). The sextile is an easy, friendly aspect that rewards a little effort. Water nourishes earth: care and practicality support each other. Pisces needs gentleness, imagination and emotional understanding; Capricorn needs commitment, respect and shared goals.

Pisces and Aquarius

Aquarius thinks in systems, Pisces feels in waves. Both are humane and idealistic; clear communication bridges the gap between head and heart. Neighbouring signs share neither element nor mode. Each tends to have what the other lacks, which makes the pair complementary but sometimes puzzling to each other. Air and water meet as head and heart; understanding grows when each takes the other's language seriously. Pisces needs gentleness, imagination and emotional understanding; Aquarius needs friendship, space and shared ideals.

Pisces and Pisces

Two Pisces share sensitivity, imagination and compassion. Emotional understanding is deep; practical matters and boundaries need deliberate care. Two people with the same Sun sign share a basic way of meeting life. That brings instant understanding and the same blind spots. What helps most is gentleness, imagination and emotional understanding, offered in both directions.

Which signs suit Pisces best?

By the classical logic of aspects, the easiest matches for Pisces are the same-element trines (Cancer and Scorpio) and the sextiles (Taurus and Capricorn), with Virgo as the complementary opposite. Squares and quincunxes are traditionally harder. In practice, though, Sun-sign compatibility predicts very little on its own: many devoted couples are squares, and many trines drift apart. What matters more is how the whole charts interact — and, above all, how two people treat each other.

Sun signs and Moon signs

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, tied to the seasons; Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, tied to the stars. Because the two are now about 24° apart, most people born between 19 February and about 15 March have their Sun in Pisces by Western reckoning but in Aquarius (Kumbha) by Vedic reckoning. Neither is the "real" sign; they measure different things.

Vedic matchmaking does not use the Sun sign at all. It compares the two Moon signs and nakshatras through Guna Milan. If that is the tradition you follow, see Pisces Moon sign compatibility.

Beyond the Sun sign: synastry

Western astrologers compare two people through synastry: the aspects between every planet in one chart and every planet in the other. Venus and Mars describe attraction and desire; the Moon describes emotional needs; Mercury how two people talk; Saturn what makes a relationship feel committed — or heavy. The composite chart, built from the midpoints of the two charts, is read for the relationship as an entity of its own. Liz Greene's Relating (1977) and Stephen Arroyo's work on the elements shaped the modern psychological approach used here.

FAQ

Who is Pisces most compatible with? Traditionally the other water signs (Cancer, Scorpio) and the sextile signs (Taurus, Capricorn). The whole chart matters far more than the Sun sign.

Is Pisces compatible with Virgo? Opposite signs are often strongly attracted and complementary. They share a mode (mutable) and balance each other's elements; the work is treating differences as balance rather than opposition.

Is my Vedic sign the same as my Western sign? Often not. Most people born in roughly the first three weeks of tropical Pisces have the Sun in Aquarius in the sidereal zodiac. Check both in your free kundli.
